“Good Morning from Baghdad,” the email started, “Our convoy serial made it safely from Kuwait to Iraq. We had over 30 vehicles in our serial with weapons locked and loaded … ” This is only one of many emails First Sgt. Ken Opatz sent to his wife, Ann, during his tour of duty in Iraq. This email, and others, is part of a wonderful exhibit of Ken Opatz’ Iraq memorabilia now on display at the Lisbon History Center.

Life-long Lisbon resident and Bronze Star recipient, Kenneth Opatz served with Delta Co., 234th Signal Battalion, 3D Signal Brigade in Iraq in 2003 through May 2004. Earlier in his military career, Ken served on active duty as an Army MP (Military Police), followed by service in the National Guard where the role of his unit changed from MP to Communications. When his unit was called to duty in Iraq, Ken was right there. Their mission was to “provide communication services to US State Department and all military units deployed in Iraq. The Battalion initially set up a Comm. Center at Saddam Hussein’s main palace in Baghdad.

The History Center exhibit displays a small part of the items Ken collected during his tour in Iraq. The centerpiece, of course, is the Bronze Star and Certificate Ken received. Ken was responsible for 180 soldiers scattered in sites all over Iraq and Kuwait. He covered over 20,000 ground miles while checking in on his soldiers, making sure they had what they needed to accomplish their mission. This exemplary service more than qualified him for the Bronze Star.

The collection also includes; Ken’s Class A uniform, complete with ribbons and insignia; his Desert Combat Uniform (DCU), helmet, and goggles; the uniform of an Iraqi Colonel; various Iraqi military medals and coins; a gas mask and bayonets; Muslim prayer rug, black robe and Kaffizeh (red scarf); and an Iraqi tank “number” plate.

Of particular importance is the large number of photographs First Sgt. Opatz took during the tour. These include many photos around Iraq, especially in and around the Republican Palace previously occupied by Saddam Hussein. The photos show the vast riches that Hussein had accumulated, his throne with the “warhead” mural as a backdrop, the pool with swim-up bar, and many items, too numerous to list. The photos also show the terrible poverty Hussein would have seen just outside the walls of his palace. The pictures vividly show the stark contrast between the Dictator and his people.

The 234th Signal Battalion completed its mission in May of2004. There were no fatalities among the soldiers of First Sgt. Opatz’ Battalion.

Kenneth Opatz retired from the National Guard in 2006. In his civilian life, Ken worked for the Iowa Correctional Prison Industries from which he retired in 2008. Ken and his wife live in Lisbon, Iowa.
This exhibit is free and open to the public and will continue until Memorial Day. This writer wishes to thank Ann Opatz for her contributions to this article.

The Lisbon History Center is located at 102 East Main Street in Lisbon, Iowa. The Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10 AM until 3 PM and may be reached by email at lisbonhistorycenter@hotmail.com or (319)-455-5058.
The FR-1 Ryan Fireball was a mixed-propulsion naval carrier fighter, that utilized both a conventional piston radial engine, and an early jet engine to boost combat speed and climb. Unfortunately the design was beset with development problems, only entering service with a single carrier squadron before VJ-day. The additional boost of the jet engine, frequently took the Fireball above the comfort zone of aerodynamic knowledge at the time, and issues with stability and compressibility at high speeds were pronounced. The airframe was not as robust as it could have been, suffering from some failures in carrier operations. Ironically the radial engine, a Wright R-1820-72W, (an outgrowth of the classic R-1820 with double the horsepower) was considerably less reliable than the General Electric I-16 Turbojet. The first landing on aircraft carrier, by an aircraft powered purely by jet propulsion, was a FR-1 Fireball that had suffered a failure of the Cyclone engine.

The Japanese surrender led to production cancellations, with only 66 aircraft produced. Serviceability issues led to an early retirement. It did however provide the US Navy with some jet experience, and was shortly followed by the the early pure-jet aircraft, such as the McDonnel FH-1 Phantom, The North American FJ-1 Fury, Grumman F9F, and the Douglas F3D SkyKnight.

In advance of NACA-Langley’s and Convair’s own delta permutations, these MO series drones were arguably the first canard-delta aircraft to fly.

Three of these small scale remote control drones were built to test basic aerodynamics and control schemes for a planned pilotless anti aircraft drone, which would have been guided to intercept and destroy enemy bombers. While development efforts at Collins were halted after 1952, the basic concept was later employed by the supersonic BOMARC air defense missle/drone.

Airpower Australia, has posted some nice photographs of Russia’s premier multi-role strike fighter, the Sukhoi SU-34, known by the Nato reporting name of ‘Fullback’.

A derivative of the earlier and long-lived famous Su-27 ‘Flanker’; the SU-34 is optimized for longer duration combat patrols, and precision strike of both land and maritime targets. There is also conjecture of a role for anti-AWACS and Tanker operations. Of particular note is the side by side seating for the crew of two, and a comparatively luxurious flight deck with a galley and a privvy.

These are some of the first new combat aircraft to come into full operational service with Russia since the early 90s.

Another Year Gone By

Here we are at the end of another year. Where did 2011 go? Did you achieve any goals during the year? I think the past year was a great one for the Club. We had a super model contest in April, several members attended the Quad Cities Airshow, and we had a large number of members attend the Nationals in Omaha. Besides these, we had many members attend other shows in the Region 5 area. We brought home lots of awards, met new friends, renewed friendships, and just had a good time. For more on our Club’s achievements, Charlie has provided quite a few in his last column as Club president.

Road Trip

On a bright beautiful morning in late September (September 24), several “Fleas” made the trip up to the Twin Cities to participate in the annual “Nordicon” hosted by the Twin Cities Aero Historians. Included in the group were Larry Clausen, Frank Miller, and Scott Raisbeck. This entire group took home some hardware. The following is a list of winning models from our club:

Larry Clausen won a bronze award with his diorama, “Ambush on the Train Strausse.”

Frank Miller won a bronze award in the 1/72 scale Jets category for his EB-57.

Frank also won a silver award in the Theme category for his EB-57.

Scott Raisbeck won a silver award for his “Wonder Woman.”

Scott also won a bronze award in the theme category for his “Batman.”

Finally, Scott won a bronze award for his 1/144 scale F-14.

President’s Column

By Charlie Kucera

These last four years have simply flown by, like the passing of a comet. I’m writing this to you all as a final Presidential Comment. No final comment would ever be complete without listing accomplishments and thanking those of you who made these accomplishments possible.

The “thank you” list is long, for many of you have been of fantastic service to the club. To start my fellow club officers, Larry Martinson as Treasurer, Scott Raisbeck as current Vice President, Mark Flickinger as previous Vice President and as head Judge for the last three years, Terry Kuch for his work as Secretary, Bill Kreuger as Historian and Newsletter Editor, Peter Bednar as the Webmaster, and Jay Stevens as the long standing club Librarian. Thank you gentlemen for all the support you have offered to me and the club.

This next list of thanks is for unsung heroes. These are the members that have contributed greatly to club, without the benefit of holding an office. Steve Smith, for his absolutely fantastic poster designs, his excellent images captured by his camera, his volunteering time to the model shows and his tireless effort to maintain the poster parties. Nate Pollock, for his continuing efforts to reach out to the community through continuing education classes at Kirkwood and to working with the Boy Scouts of America. Ted Staff, for his time and efforts at the Show’s “Make and Take” table for the last three years. Steve Larson, for the use of Klicks, his brilliant computer program that has allowed the last three shows to run so perfectly as well as the continued use of his home for Club build-a- thons. Don Harker, for his handling of the Vendors at the Show and for his steady advice and calming presence at nearly every business meeting for the last four years.

There are many of you who have assisted me by your kind thoughts and thoughtful e-mails. They were invaluable to my service, they were invaluable to supporting my moral and in the end they served to the general well-being of the Club.

The following is list of some of the high lights and accomplishments we have achieved in the last four years. We have done a great deal, and here we go:

We have had 73 different paid club members in the last four years

That breaks down this way:

58 New Members, 13 IPMS Members,

Our first female member.

Our youngest member, was 15.

Our oldest member is 82.

Our first website and Webmaster, Peter Bednar

Our first 6 hour group build, “Rommels’ Rod”

Our first two Bi-annual surveys of Club Interest and Satisfaction

Our first public “make and take,” at Klicks

Our first club sponsored activity, the Quad City Air Show

Our first complete re-write of the club’s by laws

Our first non BoxKar Hobbies meeting location

Our first and second change of locations for the Club’s Model Show

The acceptance of responsibility of the Horsky collection at the Eastern Iowa Airport.

Our first model show Poster Party, there has been four, one each year.

Our first donation of kits and model building supplies to troops stationed overseas in Iraq.

Our first family friendly picnic, held last year at Bever Park.

We have seen a 600% increase in club build-a-thons.

Our first meeting night change, from Wednesday to Thursday

The change from the acrylic awards to the new “challenge coin” type.

In closing, I am confident that Bill Kreuger will lead the club with the type of leadership that this Club expects. He will be a kind, thoughtful, progressive as well as an excellent image of what our Club wishes to project, both to the community at large as well as the modeling community. I wish Bill all the best and pledge to support his efforts in all things good for the Club. As I step aside and leave the club in Bill’s capable hands I have only one thing left to say. May the Mighty Fleas continue to Soar, Go Fleas!

Road Trip On a bright beautiful morning in late September (September 24), several “Fleas” made the trip up to the Twin Cities to participate in the annual “Nordicon” hosted by the Twin Cities Aero Historians. Included in the group were Larry Clausen, Frank Miller, and Scott Raisbeck. This entire group took home some hardware. The following is a list of winning models from our club:

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Larry Clausen won a bronze award with his diorama, “Ambush on the Train Strausse.”
